Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
